Effect of Cold Protection Methods on Leaf Abscission of Young Yuzu Trees (Citrus junos S .) in Winter

Abstract
To reduce leaf abscission of young Yuzu trees during the winter, eight different methods for cold protection were compared. Covering the canopy with a shade net was shown to be the most effective in reducing leaf abscission, thus increasing the canopy index of trees and leaf chlorophylls. This also helped to prevent excessive growth of summer shoots due to the promotion of spring shoot growth in the following season. Petiole breakage and petiolule abscission accounted for up to 66% of all leaf abscission. More leaf abscission occurred in south and west side of the canopy and in summer leaves. Leaf removal strength, as measured by the bending tensile strength, was higher in late October than in mid-January or mid-March. The tensile strength of petiolule was higher than that of petiole.
